Each year the Bellefontaine High School Amateur Radio Club (BHS-ARC elect student officers. Any member is welcome to nominate themselves or any other member for a leadership role and radio licensure is encouraged, but not required. Our club tries to keep formal meetings to a minimum and use our limited time for operating and learning new topics. The club provides opportunities to engage in community service and operating activities. At various times throughout the year, local groups conduct license testing. This is a valuable opportunity to engage with local hams. Another important activity is emergency training. You could train to report severe weather to the National Weather Service, a vital aspect of public safety. Throughout the year, contests will be held in which stations try to contact as many other stations as possible, sometimes in other countries. Many contests have school club categories, and your involvement could help the club to place well. If you choose to get your license, you can do some of these activities yourself. Handheld radios can be obtained for about $20, so it is easy to get started.
